DIY - Vintage Family Photos

Tips and reminders for the busy mom - How to fake great vintage photos of the kids!

Agh. I love my kids. I do. But sometimes they drive me absolutely insane.  With a 7 yr old boy and 5 yr old girl, all they seem to do is fight. (It's like Jekyl and Hyde.  They play so good together but the second one gets bored or steals the others space, it's on.)

So as any mother can tell you, trying to take nice, loving, peaceful family photos is an exercise bathed in pure anxiety. A seemingly hopeless escapade that I just can't seem to master. And to be honest, I don't really feel like trying so hard anymore.  This is real life, I'm over the facade ☺.

Now enter my crazy mom moments where I snap a picture of my cuties instead of losing my mind.  I have 3 or 4 photos of my kids framed in my house that get so many compliments on how beautiful they are.  Of course I can't help but share the real story, "Yes, my kids are actually fighting here.  Can you tell?"  As a disclaimer, I am by no means a professional photographer.  The only camera I own is a smart phone.  But, as my kids get older I consider myself a professional crazy lady and busy mom with some tricks up her sleeve (and MANY more to learn!).

Read on to get these 7 quick and easy ideas for the novice photographer & embattled mom - a guide to snapping quick photos

1.  Crop it to a close-up

Looks like they are hugging right?  Time to zoom out. Wait for it...
Yep. there it is.  He's actually just got done putting his little sister in a choke hold.  Our secret.

2.  Take it from another angle

This was actually a Time Out.  If you saw his face you would see his pout.  But, lucky for me I was watching over his shoulder and decided to take a quick shot while he was confined to one spot.

3.  Never let great lighting go to waste

This was one of my daughters biggest meltdowns.  After seriously contemplating leaving her on the side of the road, our better senses came into play and my husband just decided to carry her.  I chose to hang back and take an extra slow walk.  Sorry.  But it did get me this great shot!

5.  Add a filter or make it black and white

You can still see my daughters dirty knees but black and white always makes any picture look classic.  Try it in times of desperation.

6.  Take it while they sleep!

Yep.  I know we've all done this.  I mean, when else can you get them to sit still long enough?

7.  Frame the obvious shot

We're all human. And as parents we all have the same craziness, we just operate  at different levels.  Kids are awesome and the things they do are hilarious.  Showcase it.  We will miss it when these times are gone!
